Classroom Lesson Plan: Authors Dr. Theresa Ferg, Curriculum Development, Paula Robben, CCAP
Emotional Coach and Megan Bonde, Ed.S CCC-SLP
Curricular Design: VEC EDU Instructional Unit: Objective Emotional Approach©
Rationale: Health and Wellness, movement, exercise, mental focus, affective symmetry gauging (ASG)
response and visuospatial sequential working memory (VSWM).
Today students are in a post-pandemic environment at school and home, which has extended the
social and emotional learning (SEL) difficulties shown to be at the foundation of the lack of student
interest for learning. At the advent of the forced COVID quarantine in February 2020, teachers, parents
and students were expected to interface via digital technology. In many ways this change of forced online
learning did have positive outcomes. However, overall, school performances in both literacy and
mathematics have declined in the U.S. At the Colorado department of Education (CDE) the following is
an excerpt from the Health and Wellness Standards: “Health and Physical education (HPE) prepare
students to function optimally as students, global citizens, and workers who demonstrate personal
responsibility for one’s health and fitness through an active, healthy lifestyle that fosters a lifelong
commitment to wellness. These standards encourage physical literacy, which is the ability to move with
competence and confidence in a wide variety of physical activities in multiple environments that benefit
the healthy development of the whole person.” Post- Covid students need to experience again the social
interactions both in the classroom and the gym benefits of health and physical education to regain their
sense of self-efficacy for social interaction in a peer group.
Title: Addressing Student PHE and Self-efficacy
Topic: Learning Basic Taekwondo (a martial art)
Target Age: K-12 grades
Time: 45 minutes twice a week
Subject: Colorado Department of Education (CDE) Emotion Health and Wellness (EHW) content
standard #3 following Social, Emotional Learning (SEL)
Ideal Number of Learners: 25 per class
Preparation: What advance preparation if any, is required of the teacher for this lesson?
1. Review the history of General Choi Hong Hi, the Founder of Taekwondo.
2. Review the information of the Objective Emotional Approach© for learning, this is provided for
the teacher from VEC EDU upon request, which includes additional SEL curriculum.
3. Review (Paula Robben’s select SEL suggestions for teacher/student interactions)
Solution: To discover the opposite of anxiety and negative expectations, which students and
teachers have been experiencing Post-Covid. We need to engage in calm and relaxed interactions.
A calm and relaxed state is where the emotions can support the work required to accomplish
expectations more freely. This is also where the brain can engage while feeling inspired.
Grounded physical activity while sharing space with other students making the same movements
to achieve a unison, a sense of the social group, is an excellent source of SEL and HPE for
students of any age.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the lesson learners will be able to:
1. Learn the mythology of another culture i.e. Korean.
2. Learn about the emotional benefits of feeling comfortable with emotions, movements and
social interaction.
3. Learn about how to gain confidence for physical self-protection activities.
SEL & Life Skills demonstrated in this lesson:
1. Critical thinking about the importance of the effect of positive emotions and how to mitigate the
negative aspects with positive self-efficacy action through the affective symmetry gauging (ASG)
response.
2. Improve creative visualization ability through experiential learning of the martial art.
3. Increase the use of the visuospatial sequential memory (VSWM) using integrated sensory
modalities by learning the Taekwondo forms and coordinated movements and practice the forms
and patterns learned in class.
Resource Materials for Teachers:
Videos on General Choi Hong Hi and the history of Taekwondo.
Practice the forms and patterns learned in class.
Review of the curriculum design of the Objective Emotional Approach© for improved
visualization.
Accommodations:
Meghan Bonde CEO of Team Neurodiversity Eds.; Bilingual CCC-SLP
Meghan to provide comments and suggestions for neuro-diverse students upon request.
